Retrofit SCADA RTUs

At Remsdaq Ltd, we pride ourselves in providing cost-effective SCADA solutions, to meet regulatory targets world-wide. Continuing to work closely with a number of utilities, the Remsdaq CallistoIES RTU has provided many hardware solutions for both overhead and ground mounted switch gear.

In this de-regulated industry, capital expenditure is restricted and thus limits the spend on new plant hardware. Retrofitting existing equipment, rather than purchasing new, not only reduces cost, but helps maintain supply and therefore an increased level of customer service.

The Challenge

Globally electrical utilities have differing types of switchgear from numerous manufacturers, of varying vintage. Typically new equipment can be supplied with provision to retrofit remote control, but legacy type switchgear does not have this provision or solution available from the original equipment manufacturer.

In conjunction with EPDL, Remsdaq can now offer a non-intrusive, cost-effective solution that retrofits this functionality onto legacy switchgear. Therefore, allowing today’s technology to be retrofitted to older existing plant, extending further the assets operation lifecycle. Another consideration is to minimise time on site, therefore ease of installation is a paramount factor in the RTU cabinet design and actuator assemblies.

The Solution

As a result of many supply contracts, Remsdaq Ltd has developed, with its business partners, a complete solution, that meets current industry needs.

The CallistoIES RTU IP-rated cabinet is complete with ‘REC-friendly’ pad-lockable push-buttons and switches, the latest in battery back-up technology and has been coupled seamlessly with EPDL’s actuators. These off-the-shelf units are providing non-intrusive retrofit solutions for the following:

  • L&C -T4GF3, J4 & LCGT
  • YSE – Tyke & FSM
  • MG – Ringmaster RN2
  • Brush – NSM and Falcon
  • Reyrolle – ROKSS and LMI (proposed)
  • SWS – Tiger (proposed)
  • Lucy FRMU (proposed)

The mechanical connectivity of the Callisto RTU cabinet and the actuators is via site-ready Plug & Socket arrangement. These are mechanically-keyed (L/R) to assist in quick site installation and on-going maintenance. Tamper-proof options suitable for outdoor applications are also available.

Remsdaq Software Tools

CaSE – A Windows based editor that provides a user friendly means of configuring each
individual CallistoIES unit, including: I/O mapping, processing parameters, application assignments and communications protocols.

PILoT – A dedicated IEC1131-3 standard logic programming tool. PILoT supports a library of re-usable macro functions, which may be edited or combined to rapidly deliver powerful maths and logic programmes. A field-proven library of applications, such as auto-reclose, preferred-line operation, synchro-check and under-frequency load-shedding are standard and an aid to support rapid application development.

The CallistoIES is the current Remsdaq platform, designed in co-operation with electrical utility companies, world-wide, to meet their ever- changing needs for data, control and automation from various locations throughout the power network. The CallistoIES delivers as standard, an extremely feature-rich architecture, to meet both Primary and Secondary needs. The common set of hardware and Remsdaq-developed software tools, provide a common skill set and spares-holding to meet all applications.
